Konstantins Konstantinovs was born in Liebpaja which is in Latvia in 1978. He still holds the world record for a raw deadlift (without a suit) of 426 kg (939 lbs), which he did at the WPF world championships 2009. But before then there was nothing was stopping Konstantinovs, he won the 2002 WPC Junior World Powerlifting Championships before winning the GPC World Powerlifting Championships in 2003.
Konstantin is a strong man, anyone who can deadlift a weight like that has increased his core strength systematically over time. He explains that his core strength has been acquired from doing squats which just like his hero, Dr. Squat (Fred Hatfield) trains squats every day.
He explains that variety is key when developing core strength and although most powerlifters will frown at doing squats on every workout for 4 days a week, but they should first look at the way Konstantin works his squats. He starts each workout he does with squats.
He says it works for him, it keeps changing, which is very important. He explains that he used to only do ATG Oly squats. But this routine has changed to doing box squats using various heights along with bands. Konstantin also explains that he will do raw powerlifting squats using light knee wraps.
He explains that anyone who notices that they have weak knees should spare them by doing a few heavy box squats after he has done deadlifts. He would then max-out for a set of 2 or 3 reps using bands that increase the weight by 120kg at the top of the squat.
This single set doing 2-3 reps with strong bands would then be followed by removing some weight from the barbell and do a single set of 7-10 reps. On his normal training days, starting with squats would always be varied, he would do medium squats for one set doing heavy free-squats for 4 to 6 reps.
